  About Barcelona metro line 9

The Barcelona metro line 9, L9, divided into two sections (L9 North and L9 South), of which some parts are fully automated without drivers, is impressive in many respects and has a particularly interesting history as part of the city's transport network.
Planned as one of the longest metro lines in Europe, the L9 was designed to link the northern and southern parts of the Barcelona metropolitan area, including a direct connection to Barcelona-El Prat airport.
After considerable technical challenges due to the length of the line and the complexity of the underground works, the L9 line, part of which is still under construction or in the planning stage, was developed in the early 2000s, giving way to an inauguration in 2 phases starting with the L9 North section in 2009 on one side, followed by the L9 South in 2016 on the other side with a partial opening to serve the airport.
The Barcelona metro line 9 is an ambitious and innovative project in the urban transport sector with its southern section, which provides a vital connection between Barcelona city centre and Barcelona International Airport, considerably improving access and mobility on the one hand, and communication with remote areas of the city improving connectivity and urban development on the other hand.
